Turning
Torso is the tallest skyscraper in Sweden, 190 metres, and the second-tallest
residential building in Europe. Swedish authors of recognition
include Carolus Linnaeus, the father of botany and modern
taxonomy, Henning Mankell, Emanuel Swedenborg, August Strindberg,
Göran Thunström, Selma Lagerlöf, Vilhelm Moberg, Harry Martinson
and the author of the Pippi Longstocking books Astrid Lindgren.
Swedens most well-known artists are painters Alexander Roslin, Carl
Larsson, Anders Zorn, Hilma af Klint, Olle Baertling, Öyvind Fahlström,
and the sculptors Tobias Sergel and Carl Milles. Swedens most
famous contemporary artists are Alexandra Mir, Ann-Sofie Sidén,
Annika Larsson, Henrik Håkansson, Clay Ketter, Jonas Dahlberg, Annika
Eriksson, Miriam Bäckström, Johanna Billing, Jockum Nordström, Tobias
Bernstrup, Maria Friberg, Lena Cronqvist, Karin Mamma Andersson
and Maria Miesenberger. Some very well-known inventions and discoveries
were made by Swedes; Alfred Nobel, Anders Celsius, Baltzar von Platen,
Carl Wilhelm Scheele, Jöns Jakob Berzelius, John Ericsson, Anders
Jonas Ångström, Lars Magnus Ericsson, Svante Arrhenius, Arvid Carlsson
and Håkan Lans (who invented the graphic processor for colour computer
graphics). Swedish culture is also noted by pioneering works
in the early days of cinema with director Mauritz Stiller and Victor
Sjöström. In 1980s the filmmakers Ingmar Bergman and Bo Widerberg
received Academy Awards. Famous actresses who made a career abroad
was Greta Garbo, Zarah Leander, Ingrid Bergman, Ann-Margret, Lena
Olin and Anita Ekberg. Famous actors are Max von Sydow, Stellan
Skarsgård, Dolph Lundgren and Peter Stormare. Recently the
films of Lukas Moodysson and director Lasse Hallström have received
international recognition. Did we mentioned Bjorn (Björn), Anni-Frid,
Agneta and Benny = ABBA. ABBA is the most successful pop music
group ever to come out of Scandinavia. ABBA topped charts worldwide
from the mid 1970s to the early 1980s and they continue to sell
albums. The group has sold more than 370 million records.
