Deaccessioning is the process of disposing, selling or trading objects from a museum. There may be ethical issues to consider because many donors of objects expect the museum to care for them in infinity. Deaccessioning of objects in a collection can be appropriate if a museum has more than one example of an object or if the object is being included in another museums collection.
In the UK guidelines governing deaccessioning and other ethically issues can be found in the Museums Association's Code of Ethics. In the USA the guidelines on deaccessioning matters are issued by the American Association of Museums.
