Outsider Art
The term Outsider Art was first used by art critic Roger
Cardinal as an English synonym for Art Brut, Raw Art or
Rough Art. Dubuffet's term Art Brut is specific
and the term Outsider Art is more broadly and include
self-taught or Naive artists who were never institutionalized.
Outsider Artists have no contact with the mainstream
art world.

Rochers Sculptés.
Abbé Fouré, 1839-1910, having suffered a stroke at the
age of 30, retreated to a life as a hermit in the cliffs
of Rothéneuf. He carved over 300 grotesque and bizarre figures
into the rock. Rothéneuf is a village in the north west
of France, north-east from Saint-Malo.

Art Brut
Jean Dubuffet (French artist) was struck by "Bildnerei
der Geisteskranken" and began collect his own collection
of Art Brut or Raw Art. In 1948 Jean Dubuffet formed "The
Compagnie de l'Art Brut" with André Breton. He established
a collection known as The Collection de l'Art Brut containing
thousands of Art Brut works. The collection is permanently
shown in Lausanne, Switzerland.

Savant Syndrome describes a person with both a severe mental
handicap and with extraordinary mental abilities. The Savant Syndrome
often include unusual skills in arithmetic calculation or abilities
in art or music. In the movie "Rain Man" Charlie Babbitt
(Tom Cruise) discover he has an unknown autistic-savant older brother

Ferdinand Cheval
Ferdinand Cheval (French, 1836 - 1924) was a postman who
spent more than 33 years of his life creating an "Ideal Palace"
(French Palais Idéal) which is an outstanding example of naïve art.
