Rock Art Rock art is a term in archaeology
for man-made markings made on stone.
They can be
divided into: a. Rock Carvings, petroglyphs -
carvings into stone surfaces b. Pictographs -
rock and cave paintings
Rock Carvings are
created by rock removal, including pecking, scratching,
abrading, carving, drilling and sculpting. Sometimes
rock carvings (petroglyphs) are painted or heighten by polishing.
Some of the most ancient rock carvings (petroglyphs) are
the same colour as the surrounding rock. The rock
art, carvings,
in Tanum, Vitlycke and Fossum, have been painted red to
make them more visible for tourists.
Rock or Cave
paintings are paintings on cave or rock walls and ceilings,
dating to prehistoric times. The earliest known rock
paintings are dated to the Paleolithic, about 40,000 years
ago. The earliest European cave paintings are dated to about
32,000 years ago. They are often in areas of caves that
aren't easily accessed.
Creswell Crags
Creswell Crags is a limestone gorge in the North East of
the County of Derbyshire in England. The cliffs of the
ravine contain several caves that were occupied during the
last ice age, around 43,000 and 10,000 years ago.
In April 2003, engravings and bas-reliefs were found
on the ceilings and walls of some of the caves; it had previously
been thought that no British cave art existed. The
finds at Creswell Crags represent the only known examples
of Palaeolithic cave art in Britain, the most northerly
finds in Europe and one of the most extensive collection
of prehistoric bas-reliefs in the world. Their subject
matter includes representations of animals, bison and different
bird species.
